History of the Center

The concept for a Down syndrome center was born out of a need to better coordinate medical services locally for the specialized care issues arising in individuals with Down syndrome. In October 1995, a committee of interested individuals was created to explore this possibility. The EPDSC was the recipient of The Dorothy Rider Pool Health Care Trust in September 1998 receiving funds to support the Center for three years.

March 15, 1999, was the Grand Opening of The Eastern PA Down Syndrome Center. Our mission was to provide comprehensive medical evaluation, educate the community, promote disability awareness and enrich the lives of individuals with Down syndrome.
Our staff included Dr. Donald Levick as the Medical Director and Anne Marie Dolinish-Meltzer and Patti Mertz serving as coordinators. The first medical evaluation was performed on April 15, 1999.

Currently, the EPDSC has served hundreds of families in the Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York areas and beyond. Our staff is comprised of three medical doctors, three coordinators, therapists and an administrative assistant.
