New and Expectant Parents
Congratulations and welcome! The Eastern PA Down Syndrome Center is here to assist you with the many questions and concerns you are now facing. Whether you have received a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome or you were informed at the birth of your beautiful child, the EPDSC is here.
If you have just received the diagnosis, the first thing to keep in mind at this stage is that the emotions and fear you may be experiencing are completely normal. A significant change in your life has occurred and you were not ready. It is ok to be confused and even scared. We have all been there and we are there with you now.
It is only natural to fear the unknown and be worried about the future of your beautiful child whom you love so much. The best thing you can do for you, your baby, and your family is to give yourself room to “feel” all of the emotions that come your way. Whether it is happiness, anger, sadness or doubt. The most important thing; however, for you to be at this time is informed. The game has been changed for you and you are now in the midst of a reality no one ever saw coming. You are now thrust into a community that you did not want to be a part of. It’s ok, we all felt that way too. So, like you, we started learning more and more about our beloved child’s challenges so we could offer them the best care, support and chance for as normal a life as any other child.
By now you have probably heard from your doctor about the medical conditions that can accompany a diagnosis of Down syndrome. The doctor’s may very well be in that discovery mode with you and your child now. If so, be prepared to listen and ask questions! Yes, a child with Down syndrome can have medical complications, some significant and some not any different from typical children; however, there are doctor’s ready and waiting to help you and your baby throughout your journey. Some are right here in our center!! One thing your doctor can’t tell you is the sheer “will” of your baby and the newfound strength of you, the parents. We hope that by exploring our website, you can see the personal side of Down syndrome and how amazing it is.
The EPDSC has a dedicated set of parents that are more than willing to talk with you whenever you are ready. Whether you prefer email, phone, personal visit, etc. the resource is there. Please do not hesitate to contact the center to set something up. We have all been there, we have all received the diagnosis one way or another, we are all living our normal lives to the fullest and we are all here to help you through this time.
Sincerely,
EPDSC Staff
